However, a bar code was developed on the principle of Morse code in 1948 and began to change the utopia to the reality. Barcodes began to be used for easy identification of goods making his inventory and business manipulation easier.

Two-dimensional (2D) code is the most advanced type of bar code, whose origin is dated to 1984. There are approximately 20 species of these codes until now and still are being made new.

2D codes have many advantages, including:

  • much higher density of information than conventional (linear) barcodes on a much smaller area
  • possibility to encode numbers, letters, or any character ASCII table
  • sophistically protective mechanism against errors (Reed-Solomon code) allowing code readability in case of up to 30% data loss, eg. destruction or closure of code parts
  • ability to read from any direction

The spectrum of 2D codes use is very broad. The main use is in the industrial products marking for its identification in the production. It greatly relieves their subsequent control in the manufacture process.

Other possibilities of 2D codes use:

  • marked items monitoring (eg. post)
  • promotional purposes - hyperlink = use of a mobile phone with a digital camera and installed decoding software for instant load of information from the scanned 2D code – if 2D code includes the URL link code, it will open the appropriate website (in case of supported internet connection)
  • marking of identification cards for quick verification of the owner identity
  • tickets marking for quick verification of holder entry rights and the creation of electronic tickets (sending MMS with a 2D code picture with information about the right to enter)
  • tools in document settings for documents segmentation during their mass scanning

\"\"It is not possible to use ordinary readers scanning linear codes to read 2D codes, but it is necessary to use special CCD sensors working on the principle of a digital camera. On the other hand, the CCD sensor can read standard linear code without any problems.

Data Matrix code

It is the most widely used 2D matrix code in the shape of a square or rectangle. The main reasons for its wide expansion include:

  • very suitable for keeping of many data on a small area
  • writing and evaluating data is based on the principle of relative points position of the fixed size in a matrix grid
  • readability in contrast only with 20% background
