Is it possible to mark a very fine description or graphic designs with laser?

QUESTION:

We would need to make relatively difficult shape on duralumin or brass plate with a thickness of 1.5 mm. The shape contains very fine drawing and it really depends on the accuracy and design quality. The size of the shape is about 400 x 110 mm. A local company, which deals with the laser description, said us that laser marking can not be used because it is not possible to divert a beam at such a large area. Is there any other technology providing comparable results like the laser?

ANSWER:

It is possible to use a laser describing technology for your needs, even probably the best, but you must use the appropriate equipment. The marking head is usually immobile, but it contains two spherical mirrors that deflect the laser beam in two perpendicular planes. The mirror movement is controlled so that the laser beam continuously "writes" to the material. This system allows to describe the maximum area of approximately 200 x 200 mm. Restrictions do not result from a small angle mirrors deflection, but it is related to the distance when the beam is focused.

If we want to describe a larger area, we use a system accompanied by a precise position table allowing move a material by defined way, or vice versa by a marking head. The full description (eg. a long text) then is made thanks to changes of relative positions of the head and marking material. The described field is gradually moving all over the description area.

Although the beam footprint precision is high (0.1 mm), it is convenient to make the whole process ready (partial descriptions as well). We can save our work on the computer and in case of repetition preparative works have already eliminated.

It is also an advantage in your case (unlike a mechanical engraving) it is not necessary to clamp the described product, because it does not moved by any power. Therefore there is no deformation or damage on the surface of the product.
