The principle of diode-pumped solid-state crystal laser
Energy is pumped into the rare earth crystal forming the active medium of the laser by means of luminous semiconductor diodes. Either a transport optical fibre is placed between the diodes and the crystal or the crystal is excited directly by the laser diodes. The crystal and its geometry is designed in such a way that energy is gradually accumulated in the crystal, which is then processed by deflection mirrors and the scanning head lens optics. The focused laser beam can then be used to mark, engrave, drill or otherwise modify materials responsive to a given wavelength of laser radiation.
