Fiber pulsed laser

Fiber pulsed lasers operate in pulsed mode, emitting very short (usually nanosecond) pulses at regular time intervals that shock the material. The accumulated energy in a single laser pulse (fractions of mJ or more) is very effective for micromachining applications such as laser marking, engraving or drilling. A special group of pulsed lasers are the so-called MOPA fiber lasers, which provide considerable freedom in controlling the laser pulse parameters and are therefore very efficient for a wide range of applications. Because pulsed lasers deliver their energy intermittently, their average power is usually lower than that of continuous lasers, in the range of tens or a few hundred watts. In contrast, peak power is defined for pulsed lasers and can reach tens of kW in single pulses.

What are fiber lasers?

This is the most advanced architecture of solid-state lasers operating in the standard wavelength of about 1070 nm, which allows them to interact well with metals and most plastics. Due to their relatively simple design, high lifetime (commonly quoted lifetime is more than 100 thousand hours) and high efficiency, they are widely used in industrial applications. Among fibre lasers, systems with different operation can be found – continuous, pulsed and quasi-continuous, they can have different beam quality and exist in power ranges from 10 W to tens of kW. As a result, they can be successfully deployed in a wide range of applications from laser marking to cutting, welding and hardening. Fiber lasers with an average power of a few hundred W are air-cooled, while higher powers require more intensive water cooling.

The LLS-FXXP series diode-pumped infrared nanosecond MOPA laser is a new generation of fiber lasers that can operate in pulsed and continuous operation. The MOPA laser can independently define the frequency of the laser pulses (1 – 4000 kHz) along with their duration (3 – 2000 ns), thus achieving excellent results in marking or micromachining applications. Due to their excellent efficiency, these laser systems are characterized by lower power consumption and low cooling requirements, and can thus be cooled by air only up to an ambient temperature of 45 °C.

Typical applications for pulsed fibre lasers

The infrared fibre laser wavelength (about 1070 nm) shows the best interaction with metals and plastics, although it can also affect some other types of materials. The most common applications include:
