Laser ablation

Removal of the surface layer for functional and aesthetic purposes

Laser ablation, i.e. removal of the surface layer of material, is used in laser machining mainly to clean, modify surfaces or to remove a layer of paint or other layer of material. Although the application is very similar in principle to laser cleaning or engraving, the application is however, in addition is usually carried out very sensitively due to the need to maintain the integrity of the material surfaces under the top layer to be removed.

Laser ablation is most often performed to reveal the desired areas on the product whether from aesthetic or functional reasonssuch as Exposing the paintwork to allow to illuminate the buttons within the so-called Day & Night Signage. Here the laser removes the top painted layer of the button acting as a light screen, and reveals a translucent base plastic suitable for illumination with an LED.
