Marking of automotive parts

Marking of automotive parts

Customer requirement

A major company producing parts and accessories for motor vehicles needs to mark bumpers and other parts to be welded in the next operation. The customer was previously marking parts on old machines that were slowing down the production process, so they asked our company for a quote to mark their components with modern machines.

The bumper is made of steel and must be marked with the shift number, part number, date and serial number. The part description is required to be permanent, indelible and easily legible even after heat treatment during bending and pressing. Of the technologies offered (manual, micro-point and laser marking), the customer opted for manual marking, which meets all his requirements with an optimal price/performance ratio.

The other parts required for marking are also steel and these are welded in the next operation. The marking in this case consists of the shift number, part number, date and serial number.

Proposed solution

A stand-mounted pneumatic stamping machine was selected from the Lintech product range for marking the parts and integrated into the automatic production process. The stand consists of a base plate, a marking unit bracket, a stand leg, a protective cover and auxiliary fixtures for placing the marked parts. The marking itself is then carried out by a robot which, when it deposits the sheet on the stand and a sensor specially designed by Lintech, sends out the instruction to stamp. It stamps the required marking on the sheet metal and the robot then moves the sheet metal for further processing.

A stand-up pneumatic stamping system has also been designed for marking weldments, but it is controlled by a foot pedal after manual part setting.

Evaluation

The solution was designed and implemented according to customer requirements as cheap, simple and as efficient as possible. The time required for the actual part marking process is 1 second, the robot handling requires another 2 seconds. Approximately 500 bumpers are marked per day. Changing the machine punches for the next shift is done manually with a duration of 5 minutes.

To increase efficiency, several pneumatic stamping systems were supplied and installed, which were thoroughly tested in production before their official launch. The customer has expressed great satisfaction with the solution delivered and the quality of the stamping.

Warranty and service

The standard warranty on the stamping machine is 2 years, excluding consumable parts. As part of the service, a preventive inspection of the stamping machine is free of charge once a year. Guaranteed service intervention within 48 hours of reporting a fault.
