3D laser engraving

7. 5. 2024

Engraving, i.e. the targeted removal of material often to create a specific relief pattern, is an application that is already very well mastered in the 2D plane using a laser beam. Very often fibre lasers with a laser footprint size of around 40um are used for the application, capable of engraving a wide range of metallic materials accurately and in great detail. However, engraving more complex shapes with variable heights is more difficult. LINTECH’s application specialists have come up with a method that further streamlines the approach to 3D laser engraving.

The basic component in this case is the refocusing unit, which dynamically changes the diameter of the laser beam used and consequently its focusing distance. The control of the beam focus change depends on the geometry of the 3D model of the part being processed imported into the laser software. The use of the 3D model is necessary here in order to allow the laser beam to correctly follow the surface of the workpiece in a depth range of up to several tens of mm. In addition, the software predeforms the graphic motif according to the geometry of the part so that it has the correct visual appearance when burned onto curved surfaces.

However, the position of the graphic pattern, the position of the 3D model and the physical part itself must be precisely aligned for the laser process to be tuned correctly. Otherwise, the position of the pattern relative to the part may be off or the pattern may be burned out of focus and therefore out of focus with reduced view and depth. For this purpose, LINTECH has come up with a solution using a camera system that, when setting up the engraving application, transmits the image of the physical part directly to the laser software, where it is possible to zoom in on the details of the individual areas being processed. This then allows the operator to accurately and easily position the pattern and 3D model relative to the physical part.
