DMX code engraving for passivation

2. 4. 2024

Although laser marking is commonly claimed to be permanent, there are cases where this permanence has its limits. One case is the marking of parts that subsequently undergo a passivation process in which they are immersed in an acid bath. A different approach is therefore needed to identify such parts, the results of which retain the required durability. In this case, the part marking in the form of a DMX code was engraved to a depth of a few tenths of a mm.

A different approach was needed for identification, the results of which would retain the required durability. In this case, the part marking in the form of a DMX code was engraved to a depth of a few tenths of a mm. Because the engraving creates depressions at the locations of the code modules with a relatively large depth relative to their surface area, it is the shadow that is created in these depressions, and it is the shadow that subsequently creates the desired contrast on the part with the surrounding unengraved area. Even in the absence of direct surface colouration, the code therefore retains excellent legibility, which has been verified by a barcode verifier.

Although pulsed lasers with lower average power can be used for such an engraving application, in this case the application will require a longer time interval – depending on the size of the code, even several minutes. We used a pulsed laser with an average power of 100 W for our application, which was able to reduce the time of this application significantly.

We are a long-term and reliable partner for our customers in the field of laser applications and laser technology, such as:
