Even a pulsed fibre laser with an average power of 20W can be used for welding applications where thin metal materials, often of different composition, need to be welded.

In our application laboratory, we are constantly looking for new ways to use our lasers to their full potential.
In the case of a reflow joint with a top wall thickness of up to 0.3 mm, weaker nanosecond pulsed fibre lasers with an average power of, for example, only 20 W can be successfully used for welding applications.
In this particular case, due to the high energy in the pulse of the fiber laser, we achieve a bilateral transfer of local melts in the form of narrow capillaries from the upper layer to the lower layer and vice versa. On this principle, we create a very detailed spot weld with an outer diameter of about 800 micrometers. Technologically, this is not a typical melt-mixed weld. In our case, the structure of the weld is more like a large number of partial rivet joints.
This method also allows joining dissimilar (heterogeneous) metal materials – in this case copper with stainless steel. The applications are varied, ranging from joining the sleeve and shaft of a small motor (see picture below) to very tightly joining the contacts of battery cells.
