Laser welding of nickel strips to battery cells

8. 9. 2020

In our application laboratory we tested laser welding of batteries and nickel tape. Watch the video of the testing.

Asahi Consulting EP&S s.r.o. approached us based on the recommendation of one of its partners who already had good experience with LINTECH, spol. s r.o.

The subject of the request was laser welding of nickel tape to standard battery cells. As in all similar cases, after providing basic information about the application, we arranged for test samples to be made.

Mr. Bc. Kamil Nyklíček and Radek Laštovička from ASAHI also expressed interest in participating in the testing personally. According to usual practice, they sent samples in advance for feasibility evaluation. The next step was to carry out initial tests and prepare the embedding and pressure fixture.

After receiving the samples and making these preparations, a joint meeting was held in our application laboratory under the guidance of the application specialist, Ing. Krutina. Using our know-how, based on the patented process of the laser module manufacturer, SPI, we carried out a series of documented tests with different parameters.

The main criteria were the quality and strength of the welds and also the speed of processing. Tests were carried out on battery cells from leading manufacturers LG and SAMSUNG using nickel strips of two different thicknesses.

By gradual optimization, a quality round weld with a diameter of 2 mm was achieved in 0.8 s and of course with the required strength of all welds. For the application, we used a set of pulsed fibre laser with a deflection head and an F-theta lens.

With the course testing and the results were mutually satisfied. The gentlemen from ASAHI particularly appreciated the approach of the LINTECH staff and the care they received. They were also very pleased with the speed of the meeting and the execution of the tests themselves.
