Glass

Permanent and contrasting glass description

Laser marking of glass has long been the preserve of CO2 lasers, which operate at a wavelength of 10.6 µm. Moreover, these lasers were only able to engrave the glass in depth, distorting its structure and the marking was not contrasting, i.e. sufficiently legible. Currently, the short-pulse green laser is the most widely used laser for marking glass and transparent materials.

Green laser for precise glass marking

Generating low energy and heat, it enables efficient ablation and nonlinear interaction with most materials. It is designed for micromachining of hard and soft materials. Especially for marking glass, crystalline materials or plastics with low absorption, for which the use of conventional crystal and fiber lasers with a wavelength of 1064nm is ineffective. The marking is then contrasting because the letters are formed by microbubbles in the glass, which do not refract light as well as clear glass, so the marking appears almost white.

Marking even under the glass surface

Thanks to the scanning head of the laser with precise focus, we are also able to focus the laser anywhere in the material and thus “embed” the description into the depth of the material, i.e. up to several mm or cm below the surface.

By changing the focus of the laser, i.e. by focusing it to different depths, we are then able to create different levels of description and thus create plasticity in the description and simulate a 3D description of the glass.
