Single-purpose laser device for marking electric motor shafts

Single-purpose laser device for marking electric motor shafts

We designed and supplied a fully automated laser machine for marking DMC codes on shafts for Innomotics, s.r.o., o.z. Frenštát electric motors as part of their robotic production line.

Customer assignment

Single-purpose device for permanent marking of DMC codes on electric motor shafts. Requirements included:

  • full automation and integration into the existing robotic line,
  • control via the parent system,
  • the possibility of manual control if necessary.

Our solution

We designed and supplied a single-purpose marking machine using the LLS-F70P fibre laser, providing permanent and contrasting marking of metal parts. The design of the machine allows for automatic operation in a robotic line as well as manual mode if required.

Production cycle

The entire marking process is fully automated:

The robot inserts the part into the device.
Mechanical jaws fix the part and at the same time close the working area, thus ensuring protection against the laser beam propagation.
The camera system identifies the shaft centre and ensures the exact positioning of the marking.
The laser marks the DMC and the numerical code when:
The DMC is positioned as close to the centre as possible.
The numeric code is positioned as close as possible to the centre dimple and is also curved according to its diameter, so that the code optically “describes” its edge and is easy to read.
The quality of the marking is verified by the DMC reader and the resulting data is then sent to the database.

Technical equipment of the device

The device is equipped with a fiber laser of the LLS-FXXP series. Based on testing in our application lab, a 70W variant (LLS-F70P) was chosen to enable faster and deeper marking. Due to the requirement for high contrast and long marking life, a process close to engraving was used. It is therefore not a conventional surface marking, but a marking that partially extends into the depth of the material. LLS-FXXP lasers are also suitable in lower power versions (e.g. 20W), but for efficient and fast marking, the 70W version is the optimal option.

The machine operation is controlled by a higher-level system with which the machine communicates via industry-standard protocols. Marking data is stored in real time in a database.

The supplied device includes a customized LinMark application created by our programmers. It is the main user interface and provides convenient work with production data. The application is programmed in C# and allows working with complex data structures.

Its main tasks include:

  • PLC status display,
  • ensuring control of the camera system,
  • work with local database,
  • communication with the parent system,
  • evaluation of ok/nok cycles,
  • communication with the wireless code reader.

In this case, the graphical interface of the application is adapted for use with a single monitor in an ergonomic position in relation to the operator, with an emphasis on maximizing user-friendliness based on the long experience of the designers of LINTECH, spol. s r.o. with the design of single-purpose devices.

The supplied equipment ensures reliable marking of rotating parts in series production.
